Reading and Phonics

We use the Sounds Write phonics scheme to teach reading and spelling.  Sounds Write is a "synthetic phonics" scheme.  All teachers and teaching assistants have attended a five day Sounds Write course to ensure continuity and progression throughout the school.

The school uses Accelerated Reader to track and reward reading.  We assess children's level of comprehension and decoding to set an initial reading range within AR, children choose books within this prescribed range.  When children finish a book, they take a computer test - specific to the book - to gauge their understanding of the text.  AR logs the results of these quizzes, this enables teachers to pitch future book choices at the correct level for the child.  AR also enables teachers to set targets for the number of books read, average quiz scores or book level for children to aim for.  We run frequent reward days for children who meet their reading targets.

Guided reading is daily, taking place in class groups in years three and four and in sets in years five and six.  Vulnerable children in the lower school receive two guided sessions per week. 

The Toe by Toe scheme is used as a remedial action for children who are experience significant difficulties with reading.  Miss Clark leads this across the school and has carried out training for teachers and volunteer
